A Leaving Song
by Broken Records

Class today-- woke up at like 8:15 and made it to class by 9, WITH my homework done. What up. Next, I went to stalk Ruth inside her class, and then I went back to the car, and home. Ate breakfast, made a deposit, and tried slashing traffic to make it to work at a decent time. Got there a little late because of the damn 826. It took literally 15 minutes to get from Coral Way to 8th street, at which point I was like, nah nigga, this some bullish, and went the long way (por la cincuenticiete!!). Worked on the final bios and finished! And then took Elena to the airport and started making copies of shiz. Dale! "Estas muy ochentón!" Jaja, España es diferente. Had fun today. Now determined to learn French.

Missed class working on bios. :| That will not happen again. Went to reacting, layed down some law and then had a chill assembly.
Walked Mileini to baby lab, and then went to see Alan for advising. Now he knows all my plans and can foil them at any minute! Overreacting. Came home, put on Elite Squad to some disapproval, and then stopped it a quarter in and headed out to Jaife's. Blue Valentine at Paragon. After we all got home:

J: Man tonight was pretty damn kick ass! ^.^
R: It was awesome
R: !
J: Lolololol
R: I have to admit, best Thursday night
J: Seriously, we got our normal ammount of porn in the movie then u peeped in a porno shop asian food, mileini and a light house

Gonna Fly Now
by Bill Conti

At work today I went over to IT to get my entourage synced to the MIFF email, and after a lot of trying, we finally did it. Well, they did it. It was a victory for all of us, though. Took the metro mover back to First Street and picked up a croqueta preparada on te way back to the office. Once I got there we started proofreading the Film Guide. Diliana sent in her bios and I made them Team Robert worthy and submitted them. Three are left in the running, for all of them to be finished. Every single director and juror bio, and we're so close. Sometime today we started to destroy the grid, when I stopped everyone and went to get the "Printing on Letterhead!" guy to take a photo of the Danette, Roberto, Vivian and I in front of it. We had fun demolishing it, as a certain clandestine video will show. Got home with some juices I brought back from Itita's, and with some unbaked bread from La Vaquita. Watched an Ellen to pass the time, and then caught Castle at 10. Almost 1AM, and I've been sorting through emails and the reacting database online (If there was ever a time to say Yikes...). Tomorrow it's gonna get crazy.

The Twist
by Frightened Rabbit

I started to look for a replacement for the day of the FR concert in Gainesville to avoid repeating music, but I left it alone. The music served me for a purpose back then, which is why I picked it. Now I see it in a completely different light, and The Twist means a completely different thing to me today. This is how I justify today's double addition. It's the same song taken from a completely different angle.

Got home after a different night at 4AM. Got up at 12:30, took a shower, and sat at the computer for fixins. Most often I think as much as I reflected today. Watched some trivialities on television and then got out of the house. I went to Lincoln Road to check out some glasses, then came back to Publix for some groceries for the cooking teacher. Note to self: the fact that pineapple soda is delicious does not guarantee that the same will apply with coconut soda. In fact, it doesn't. I thought some more, and then FR lyrics popped into my head. The Twist is today's song because of its poetry and its power to seal today with red wax. FR, you guys are real. Thanks for that.

Worked until 3, spent most of the day organizing and trading sob stories with Moran. That dude's cool, man. I don't care what you say. Went to Itita's, where there was some kind of food action going on. I Put a Spell on You
by Screamin' Jay Hawkins

Panther promotions meeting after Anaís came to my myth, ritual class in the 'am. Second assembly meeting after that, debut of the moment of silence in the beginning, and made the first arrest, of Justin. He was back talking and criticizing, and my guards silenced him for today. The assembly erupted in laughter and applause. It went well, I think. Samantha and Octavio gave a great speech, and so did Kirk and the King. After that I talked comics and Firefly with Mels until GC. Ran into Adrián, reunion time. Headed then to BK to meet Anaís for some chicken sandwiches. Talked assembly and movies with Kirk and Mels who joined us. Was congratulated on the assembly really often today.. It was weird, like there was a secret plot against me and everyone was being nice. They were serious; it ran pretty smoothly.
Supposed to work on bioze today but instead watched a short film collection and evaded any hw. Facebooked some, which was a throwback. I didn't really; I just talked to Mileini. Watched Am Idol with my rents and then read ma the assembly rules and tried to explain the game. It's 11. Good night.

For Once In My Life
by Frank Sinatra

This song is my life right now. I'm starting to think things couldn't go better. I have a fantastic internship, I have great friends, I was just elected president of the assembly, and I'm finally starting to figure out my life. This is for my family, which is my greatest force. I'm so happy. Today I realized that how I feel about you is nothing compared to the inverse. It's so bittersweet, the feeling. For the first time in a long time, I felt like a kid. But I understood you both. Thank you for not pretending to know it all and for letting me feel like this life is a mystery we're figuring out together. Please don't go, because without you I would lose my spirit. I need you. I need you both.

What did I do today? I went to mysticism in the morning, talked about Native American religion, stared at the TA for more than normal, went up to DM 4 to research the region I hail from, read the gamebook, and make a speech. I ran into Barb Weitz in the hallway, and she shot me into the clouds. After that was reacting, where I gave my speech, introduced my region, and chilled with Mileini. Bought chips, owe her a quarter. After class Andrew came to summon me by the King's people, which was the weirdest thing ever, and after that I caught up with Mileini on her way to the baby lab. Turns out it's not a vehicle for infant chemical testing, :( Oh well. Came home, ate a wrap dad made special order with some ruffles, and then waited for mami to get home. He finished watching the English Patient today. Talked about our family scandal for a while, and then Ma and I broke off into the room to finish talking about ourselves. Seriously, it's like this song was exploding in chorus every few hours today. I thought the day I got the job at MIFF was up there with the best days of my life because of the sheer unprecedented excitement, but today trumps it. By a mile. It was a simple day spent at school and at home, but I spent it with the people I most care about, and I realized you don't need anything else, honestly this time.

Finished upp all our checklists and then got to working on the Industry PowerPoint. Got all through World Comp, and then had to go home. 8:10. Planned on seeing Partir today, but my family advised me against it so I came straight home. Tatyana had gotten me a free pass from the Tower people, and as it turns out I couldn't go tonight. It worked out, though, because I don't like taking advantage of such a small venue. Getting into the Tower for free would be weird.. I'm so used to getting my ticket punched at the front and enjoying the cheapness and exclusivity of it all. It's a great place. Listened to the mellow on my way home, and when I got here I caught the ending of It's Complicated, which the rents had been watching. Jessie strolled out of the shower nonchalantly sometime after. Nite. Hopefully getting up early tomorrow to review the gamebook and make some kind of a speech that appeals to the Jacobins, the Royalists, and everyone else. What am I getting myself into with this assembly? Lord, oh lord.

Ça Plane Pour Moi
by Plastic Bertrand

Second day of school proved to be very interesting. First class: Myth, Ritual, and Mysticism, 9:30 a.m.
Professor Phyllis Baker is a free spirit, to say the least. She did something I've never seen done before: put a tablecloth on the desk at the front of the room. This is the same room I had Nutrition in.. and dreaded. Today proves a little change of atmosphere (and maybe studying something you actually enjoy) can brighten up the room. I mean, she also put out banana bread, cookies, magic candles and a crystal ball, but it was really the zebra print that did the trick. Haha it was nuts. Very different, very interesting. It's nice to see a woman that has a Ph. D. and hasn't completely lost her sense of humanity. It takes me back to the Ogden days! That is, of course, if Ogden were an African-American mystic. After that, the day got French, strangely. Well, not directly after. On my way to eat something I found Yelen, who was also hungry. Long story short, we shared the Einstein's experience. Trekked to DM to meet Weitz and she was there! We talked for a while, swapped festival stories and learned about Crazy Catherine and signed up for independent study. Reminder: look over all those Prague e-mails! Buy a calendar. OUI! Ça Plane Pour Moi! Finished researching Vendée and went to reacting. There was French pronunciation all over the place, and we were all full of Nationalism. Haha! Ah, Sound! I'm back on my bike. Ça Plane Pour Moi! Went back to the car and came home! Watched last night's Castle with the family, and then they left to eat at this place there. Ashley the cute baby's house. I stayed home, worked on the Sound and iTunes, shazammin', then watched Bottle Shock (which was great)! Netflix, baby! One of my greatest investments. Reminder #2: One of these days, get around to watching the rest of the festival films you have! It's almost midnight and I'm hittin' the bed. Early morning tomorrow, followed hopefully by calendar fixins and the fest. Peace, people! Ça Plane Pour Moi!

by Daft Punk

Today was the first day of school. I went to "Urban Ecology," which looks like I'm going to have to milk the interest out of. It has potential. Took a breakfast break to eat breakfast with Tiff and Mateo, and then headed back to the library to read up on Vendée, which I'm still not done with.
It's eleven pm.
After that I had my one o'clock class, Language and Culture, which I think is going to be great! Unfortunately I might have to drop it, to avoid heart attacks. Working at MIFF and having four classes is not the easiest thing to do. Especially when there's reading involved. Lots of reading. Went over to MIFF as soon as I could, and found out we made deadline on film stills! It was awesome. Today they made the final (fingers crossed) changes to scheduling. Finished inputting the checklists we have, only leaving about seven out of the picture. Things are progressing. Planning on reworking some bios tomorrow, after Honors. Before that I have to find a slot to study for Vendée, and sometime during the day I'll talk to Professor Weitz and finally ask her about the trip and the internship credits. I need this done bu Friday. Friday, people!
After getting out of work I headed to Sunset for a screening of The Green Hornet, which I didn't make it to. I ended up buying a ticket for The Fighter, which was great. Kira, I get you. The experience is underrated. Came straight home. Did not go to five guys. Did not pass Go. Did not collect $200.

by Plain White T's

Got up late, started to clean up and then Carlos came over. Installed Office for free on my computer-- whatuuuup! Thank you, UTS @ FIU. Rents drove me to Best Buy to see about Parallels and went to Publix. At the Buy I was advised against it. Boot Camp, they say. Came home and watched a few eps of Castle with everyone. Argued over Alexis's mom and Jess and I started keeping score of our one-ups. First point was an internet advantage, so I surrendered it. Tomorrow we start fresh.
Reminder: e-mail Carlos and Mileini the Green Hornet screening listing. It wasn't really a music day.. Which is weird. These past few days been weird, actually, seeing that my music time is my free time, which has lately been scarce. The only music I heard was the one on Castle and the bits of playlist from Friday Morning's on the way to and from Best Buy. This song is a throwback to '08. It was on an episode of Castle, and it serves as a lifesaver for this blog. When in doubt, television pulls you out of the water (that, my friends, is a scary principle to fathom).

SONG OF THE DAY #235
Saturday, January 8th, 2011
Ain't No Sunshine
by Bill Withers

This song is such a hard-hitter that I was hesitant to put it on here on nothing more than an average day. Jessie reminded me of it today, when she was repeating "I know," and then phased onto another song. "Oh. I thought you were singing one of my favorite songs," I told her. "Which one?" she asked, and I played it for her. It's strange, because this is the ultimate melancholic song, yet I felt great today. It's too classic and too meaningful a song to place on a day so average. But then again, there's always the argument that our days are nothing but average. Any given one of them has a surprising meaning behind it. That isn't to say that this won't be repeated. One of these days I'm going to feel terrible about something, and that day-- the day when my antics finally come back to bite me in the ass-- Bill Withers will be there relieving me of my misery, allowing me to uncontrollably wallow in it.

Today was my return to Best Buy after two weeks of being gone. It's my first old work day since I started working at the festival. It was a short work day, 10 to 3. Elo was my co-p. I just found out she might go to Best Buy mobile, deserting me in DI. Who will I have now, the customer-oppressive veteran and the character-indifferent new addition? There were always two reasons I liked my job: my friends, and the fact that I get to help people understand things they couldn't before. One of those is fading. I haven't spoken to Vicky in too long a time, and now Elo is going. Damn Mayte is moving to Canada. Ferd and Tony are still here, but I hardly see them because of departmental compartmentalization. And on that note, Victor's a lost cause, too. Sam, the cool merch girl that doubled as the love of my work life is gone, too... Moved, just like that, to another city. And it all started with Camila. You readers have no idea what I'm talking about, but this will be a memoir to me one day, when I become an oldie looking for a flashback into younger days.

Maybe then the song will apply.

I came home from work to my dad asleep on the couch, and decided I was very tired. I started to watch The English Patient, knowing that tomorrow I'll have to read for Reacting. That movie is sad for no reason. Jessie, of course, didn't take long to accuse me of watching "a piece of crap," like she always does, and swiftly replaced my English Patient with Castle, Season 2. Sono Castello. Watched a few Castles with everyone, and then we all went to bed, where I finished the last hour of the movie, Jessie tried for a quick shower (47 minutes is a low record!) and my parents went to sleep after some mildly uncontrollable laughter. It's fun sometimes seeing them at each other's throats and then transition into getting along better than any other couple on the planet. It's kind of nice. As for today's filmic, I have no review for The English Patient. I don't want to get into Ralph Fiennes' muted, scored-over screaming; it just depressed me. I just have to say this: it eerily reminded me of Amadeus. Everything else made for a fine film (especially La Binoche, who always steals my heart).

Between Two Lungs
by Florence + The Machine

Got up at 10:30, took Mawms her lunchbox, then took the long way to work: Coral Way, 27th, US1, I95, Exit 2B.
Got there at exactly 12:00 noon. Stayed until 7 Programming it up. Today was interesting... a couple things happened. I left a message in French and now everyone thinks I'm fluent, I went to Nino's pizza and bought a Sicilian, I worked on Roberto and Vivian's films, the former was sick and didn't make it to work this morning. Tomorrow is our next slotting meeting, and we don't have all the films' formats. I'm freaking out. I feel like we're about to suffer the wrath of Jaie. O, Canada.
Getting up early tomorrow to try to make it to work at 8, when the building opens. Hopefully I'll get some formats in or get some checklists in, finally. I still have our list to finish, and there are about 13 titles with absolutely no information. If things continue this way I'm going to start killing filmmakers. The movie's FINISHED! What else do you have to do besides promote it?

My family is angry when I get home from work? What a surprise. I went to T-Mobile with my mom and hung out for a few hours unnecessarily. It was an experience as bland as bland can be.

Later at night, I saw a certain unnamed film in our Ibero competition, which ended up being a terrible disappointment. I'm struggling to describe it. It was like a Jim Jarmusch film without the black comic relief or any of the somewhat rich and cultivated secondary characters. It was basically a collection of very long establishing shots, and medium shots that were just as drudging and uneventful. These were very artfully set to the sounds of closing doors and the ocean. The characters utter two words every ten minutes, with the exception of a taxi driver fifteen minutes shy of the end of the film. The audience very quickly tires of his nonsense, and it is engrossingly clear at the end of the film that the main character had as well. After painting a picture of the lifeless existence of its protagonist, the film reveals several details that the audience doesn't know what to make of. Said climax occurs in the five or six minutes prior to the film's abrupt ending. Perhaps the film was so painstakingly slow because it mirrored the internal turmoil of its central character (which the audience never seems to understand). Perhaps the film is crafted to reflect the meaninglessness of Spanish life in the commercial age, where there is nothing but suffering, unemployment, empty sex, and crime. That, and far too much time. What the film accomplishes is giving the audience a glint into a single spanish life, and this becomes very clear into the final third of the film. It is about one man and his frustrated existence. The film makes its audience feel just as frustrated as its sad antihero. In order to stand as a reputable piece, it's my assessment and plea that the director give us a few more pieces. I'd be alright with the film if it was part of a series, whereby the audience has several works to draw a given theme from, such as in the collection of french shorts in Paris, Je T'Aime (2006). Otherwise, the film alone scrambles to discern an identity that in the end it simply does not find.

Lost Without You
by Robin Thicke

Today I got up early and got to work at 9 for my first official programming meeting, followed by the first of a couple very long slotting meetings. Indescribable how exciting it was to be sitting in a room with the genius behind something this incredible, and to be participating! We like similar things, have conversation-piece opinions on art and film, and we get down to it. It's amazing, and it's certainly a niche. After the meeting we went to eat at a small place called SOI, where Japanese and Thai specialties were served.. It wasn't bad-- Pineapple Fried Rice was exquisite if I may say so. This song played after quite an outburst of Jay-Z that was pretty funny. The song pretty much set the tone for the rest of the day, and for the day leading up to it. It was shrouded by Florence and the Machine, but there was an overall serenity that filled the day. I came home, went to the library and checked out an amazonian recommendation and "Naked Heat," met moms at Winn-D, bought Almond milk and cookies (it's not bad!), and plans for ice skating fell through, of course. Went to see Love & Other Drugs, the first movie of 2011, with Jaife. Jenny joined in later, and Wendy had already seen it. I arranged my movie tickets and filled out uncared for posts from the close of the year. It looks like I'm going to have to wait until spring break to add images, since the little time I have I'll spend on my room and at MIFF. No more movies for a while. Nothing except MIFFflix and the occasional Instant. Castle's back, too. Ya tu sabes... Ahora sí que es, y no cuando tú decías. Peace. Keep it locked.

Slice Open The Day
by The Accidental

Got up at around 12:30 and got to work at 2. Imported checklists listening to the 140 songs my iPod now has in it, after yesterday's (technically this morning's) swipe. I added Dark Was The Night, The Accidental, Marie Antoinette and Florence, with Bon Iver and Adele among a few select others. The shuffle sounded pretty much like a mix of all of these sounds, which is why The Accidental is a good fit. Slice Open is versatile in that it has the fluidity of something like O'Halloran's "Opus 23," but has clear and subtle alternative roots that are much more like Bon Iver, and even Florence's "Liar." It's the perfect tie-in. After work I went straight home, ate and fell asleep. Woke up four hours later and got to watchin' some new Castle and, strangely, House Hunters: San Francisco. It's 2 AM and I'm going back to bed. Peace, y'all.

Te lo agradezco, pero no
by Alejandro Sanz

Today was New Year's Eve.. This post is a few days late, given, but it is commemorative nonetheless. This marks the end of the Sound's creation year! I can hardly believe it. Today was spent prepping for the New Year, assembling what might be our last party in this house, for now. Arranged tables and chairs, decorated, tableclothed and the like.
This song was played a few times, since I felt like it was the mood I wanted to be in. lol
I discovered apple remote, which I can connect to my new MacBook! It was great, and that's how we connected to the music later that night, and how we decided to test the waters for the party. Cross-referenced my "Mebbes" playlist, deciding whether or not to add some fusion to the otherwise Salsa assembly. There was definitely a playlist by the end of the night, including this one and tomorrow's song, and John Mayer's Slow Dancing In A Burning Room, Frank Sinatra's Auld Lang Syne, and New Order's Age of Consent, which was a last minute early morning Jam a little over five hours into 2011. There are pictures. This went down as one of the greatest times spent in this house. The party was great, and it reminded us most importantly of the great company we keep. They help us ward off all the fucked up shit the world also has to offer. We're a good core, and we'll have that no matter where we'e living. Take a look at some photos, watch a good movie, and go out and have fun!

Keep your head, keep good company, and be kind to one another.
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE SOUND!
