TWO HUNDRED TWENTY-SIX

SONG OF THE DAY #226
Thursday, December 30th, 2010
Light On
by Joey Ryan

I'm writing this two days after, on the morning of the second. I just got home from Bongos with Wendy for her birthday, but I'll cover that on the New Year's Day edition of the Sound, which will also be tragically late. How do I remember what happened two-- no, three-- nights ago after these past two crazy ones? I'll tell you, friends. iTunes. I added "Light On" and "No One Else Like You" by Joey Ryan (and "Meet Me by the Water" by Rachael Yamagata) after watching Bella on the night of the 30th. Really cool movie. Great music. Vibin'. For the life of me, though, I can't remember what happened in the daytime. I fear for my future sometimes, since I find it hard to remember my recent past.. It's a good excuse to keep the Sound, though. This serves as a journal more personal than any paper-and-pen chronicle would ever be, because of the music's way of transporting me back to a given day.
Logically not a day like this, where I can't even remember two days after the fact, but on a regular day it works. Maybe. Maybe it's just like communism: works in theory, not so much in application. Signing off. Have a great 2011, Sounders. Peace.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011: OH! I remember what I did this morning-- I cleaned the backyard! The furniture, the floors, the bar, the tables, todo! I put the exercise equipment inside and started reading the bartending book, like I do every year around this time. I needed Brandy, Dark Creme de Cacao, and Bailey's among some other things, because I decied I'd make a couple specific drinks the day after. Of course I didn't make any, realizing later this night that my god-given gifts don't include bartending. Brandy Alexanders are supposed to go down easy. -_-
Itito came over sometime later with bottles of stuff with Itita, Tio Orestes y Fina, and we made simple syrup to store in the outside fridge. They wanted to watch Little Fockers, and I insisted on Sono Castillo! But they put on la Novela instead. The space between this and the night, when I watched Bella, is the blurred part. But give it another week; maybe I'll get it by then.

Nowhere Boy @ night. Went to the Tower at around 6:30, only to find out there was a schedule change and that the movie was at 9. So I went to Itito's to hang out, saw Aida and Eliana, and after a couple hours went back to the Tower and met up with Mileini and Jaife. Needless to say, the movie was pretty greatish. It just freaked me out that the director married the kid, and that now they have a kid. But real world aside, Lennon roolz and so did the movie. Listened to 90.5 in the meantime in between time. Got some McD's after the movie and took some blurry pictures on the corner of 14th and 8th. Cool intercultural mural going on there...

Got up today to work from 9 in the morning to 3, then went home expecting to go watch Tron Legacy with Elena at night. These plans were obviously far fetched, since Elena got sick and couldn't go. Partied it up with Mileini! Whatup! I'm sorry to say that Tron, though, was a bit of a disappointment. Met up with Jaife afterwards for coffee and gab. Caveat: Do NOT try the apple thing at Starbucks. Blech!

For your reading pleasure and for my own future reference, the following is me watching Tron: Legacy.

(Giddy as a schoolboy) It's starting!!
This score is amazing!
Jeff Bridges looks weird.
There was a reason I hated The Polar Express.
This movie is going to be awesome.
Haha he drives a motorcycle! I wonder what that's setting up for... giggle
NO WHEYSSS! the immersion sequence was fantastic!
Omg. OMG!!!
An hour and a half later.
There is no need for Michael Sheen's character. Rephrase that: there is no need for Michael Sheen.
Srsly?
Tron?! Tron is alive?
Tron is bad? This blows.
LIGHT JETS?! WTF?! Cool?
Tron... why are you?? Pause. Gasp. Nooo!!! :(
There was no need for this.
Flynn is a Jedi!?
Flynn is God?
Is Sam Jesus?
Wait, what the... Noooooo!!!
Nice homage - er, I mean RIP-OFF! - of the Tron pose.
(Whining) Ehhhehh... why??
(walking down the theater steps)
I don't know how I feel about this.
(in the theater lobby)
Ehh, it was just ok.
(at Starbucks)
Too bad it sucked.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
by Ella Fitzgerald

6:30 PM: Though today was a very sleepy day filled with getting up pretty early and opening presents, going over to Itita's and insulting each other in true family tradition, I can't help but think of this song, which always reminds me of a peaceful Christmas with pasta, laughter, and Nancy Meyers. It was the first day Tia wasn't over on Christmas morning, which I thought would be strange.. Instead we enjoyed the comedy stylings of our new family.

What am I thinking? I'm sitting at home spending Christmas alone. I'm going back to Itita's straight away, and I'm taking The Holiday with me. But first, I'm making a Christmas playlist to go with the season. It's late, but great.

Tu Amor Me Hace Bien
by Marc Anthony

Bought my presents and wrapped them in old magazine ads when I got home from work at around 8:00! Was late to Itita's but still had a ton o' fun with Renee and everyone else. Food was the same as every year, and we came to the realization that we've been doing nothing with our lives for the past year. It has flown by. It's funny, because at work a year seems like an eternity. At home, tough, it passes by quicker than I'd ever imagined. And that sucks.

Also, Rogelito loves Marc Anthony. Why? God knows.

The Christmas Song
by Tim Reynolds

Went straight to MIFF after the last day of Camp! Ayo is responsible for the first jam. Hung out with Susi after coming home from the end of my first week at work. Went to Lincoln and to the beach, then down to Washington and up Española. Came home, ktfo. All I heard of the second song was a snippet on a radio station somewhere, but it felt like what sitting on the beach at night did. It was somewhat familiar, and I found out afterwards it was a christmas song. That's not weird, is it? Sets the mood for the night and helps ring in the season! Not really, but it's alright. They're both good.

Anyone Else But You
by Michael Cera & Ellen Page
and
La Bala de Billy
por Pupy Y Los Que Son Son

This morning was grool, made some killah cookies in mom's class at camp, and finished some cool hand printing in Kira's. Just like yesterday and the day before, I snickered at Elena every time I passed her in a hall. Hehe... This morning morning (last night) I was listening to this song on repeat, and since I don't really have a song for today, and La Bala De Billy only applies to tonight, when I redid the R.C. Interiors letter of protest and then watched some hardcore rooftop salsa on youtube, I figured I needed something that was closer to the tone of the day overall. Camp was like this playing as I saw myself in the kids' eyes, and the song can be applied to today, when I was one of the seven people that were present in the department meeting at work. OMAIGAD I'm excited. We worked on some director bios today, and after getting out and dropping off Roberto on Washington, I came home to even more revisions. I have three jobs right now. And school starts on the third. GARGH I love this. I feel like I need to clean the room, though, so I can have room to think. Think Richard Jenkins in Eat, Pray, Love. Clear out all that space (scary sound)! Peace; be kind to each other..

The Christmas Song
by Nat King Cole

This song is good for today... A few things happened before I got to the office, but once I got there the mood was like this. It was incredible. Being there is pretty calming, actually. This morning I started off at camp, where we packaged up our soaps and pillows, wrapped our frames in homemade wrapping paper, and made mints. Said Kira "You're going tape crazy. Look. One piece. That just looks ghetto." LMAO. This morning before class, we acted out the Angel's coming to Mary. Hilarious performance on our part. Said Ayo "--AND THEN THE ANGEL MENTIONED ELIZABETH (cough cough)," after which I popped back up and replied "AH, YES! Elizabeth!" Lol. It was a fun morning; Ayo's hilarious.
The afternoon brought the office holiday lunch at Piola on Brickell, where I met Jay and the rest of the staff I hadn't yet. I sat with who happened to be my co-intern and learned about her filmmaking experiences, after which I drove back to the office. The rest of the gang had taken the metro mover! That's an exclamation mark... because I said so.I mentioned it to Danette and I got a parking pass! I trained my co-pilot in the database, learned some more about the way things work at MIFF, and laughed with Vivian several times, lol. Toward he end, I tore down the personalized remnants of the last Programming people, and tomorrow starts the personalization of the 2011 staff-- yeah, that's me. Did I mention I have a company email? I have a company email! It ends in @miamifilmfestival.com--- OH, YES! It's so exciting!!! Parking pass, email, own computer, own desk, own phone number.... It's all happening so fast! And I'm milking every second of it. With regard to song choice, Vivian was playing this on Pandora today and it stuck. It's just the mood. Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe help to make the season bright. I don't have either of those, but I can still wish you a Merry christmas, readers. Merry Christmas to you all. Enjoy this little Nat King Cole as I have, and always will.

It was my first dat at MIFF after the first day of winter camp. It. Was. Awesome. I got to work with Vivian and Roberto, and was shown around the office and trained on the database, an things MIFF. Came home to work on the Mac and ktfo later on. Classical got me through the day, and Christmas music through the afternoon. Nothing says office Christmas like scarves and a Pandora Holiday Station! Be kind to one another,
Happy Christmas,

Age of Consent
by New Order

Got up early today (hah!) and went to Megan's for the shepherds' orientation. Tomorrow's the first day of winter camp, bright and early, in seven hours. I went to Best Buy today to solve my phone problem, got the EVO from Sprint and a contract I have 30 days to back out of, which will likely happen. I could probably make do with this, but if I can keep the iPhone without having to make an extra investment, I will take the opportunity. So now I have a new number which three people know, I have a contact list that is very empty, and I'm looking at the abyss that is personalizing a new phone. I imagine breaking in a new device hurts more than sporting new heels (or something). It's just painstaking, is all. By the way, this is coming from my new open item MacBook Pro, which was an opportunity that does not come often. Scored this baby today (!), but with it I found I'm an incredibly nostalgic person. The prospect of leaving my bulky, battery-barren HP behind is shudderful. Yes, shudderful. What's that? Not a word, you say? Naysayers, Cee Lo Green has a new song I'd like to dedicate to you. Yes, though, my old laptop is trusty and great, and on many levels I think it's too early for an upgrade. Ol' Remy has some good years left in him, and without living to its natural span, it's becoming closet material. I love you, buddy. This one's for you. Thanks for being there for me when I needed you; I'll never forget your great reign.

Today was also comprised of the aforementioned harsh labor that comes with new tech, and with watching my mom bake for tomorrow and my sister trying to escape said baking. Several times. We had some good convoes today, like we do. It was a good'un, filled with reunions of all kinds (Carlos!) and with some awesome sidebars.

This was stuck in there randomly today. I don't even have it in my iPod, which is soon to be *just* an iPod. Finished watching Marie Antoinette this morning, and then worked from 3 to close-- and got out of work at 1:15. It was pretty crazy! Took an hour with Elo to munch on some Mao--- super perros, baby! We Are Sex Bob-Omb
by Sex Bob-Omb

Interview at MIFF at 2; got there early and interviewed, and am headed back Monday afternoon to figure out the rest. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song is how I felt for most of the day.
Went to pick up Jesster, then to Itita's to do some cheer spreadin'. Spent some hours at Best Buy trying to figure out a phone plan, and I'm headed back there in the morning to wrap it up. Vicky is now a source of gossip? Yeah, she knows everyone. Who do I know? Alfred. It's like I don't even work there. I changed my work schedule to one day a week-- saturdays.
In other news, I ran into Elena and Lisa on my way out of the store, and we made dim-witted plans to watch Tron. Tix were sold out like a mo' fo'. I don't know what that means. Hopefully I'll get some Liselena time this week, before she goes off to New York for her fancy internship (the one I'll find out about on Sunday). Goodnight, moon. I have no phone.

P.S. 213-E was Haller's room at Coral Park. Ah, mem'ries.

Got up at around 2 and after some niftin' around went to pick up some "tickets" at Itita's. Phone disconnected. Dad frustrated. Son annoyed. Stayed for a little while, talking to Fina and trying on my knit genius, and then came home not having gone to the schmancy. Changed and went to the Buy to pick up my free swetuh and The Sentinel. Came home, watched it, and left for Mileini's to see Black Swan at Coco Walk. Jaife tag-alongs are always fun :D and that movie was krayzaaaaaay! Seriously boss film.

by Andrew Bird

Watched some missed eps of Psych and Glee, then went to work at 3. It was pretty crazy... It felt like I was there forever. We got out at around 12, and the day was made by a disgruntled customer who called corporate to complain, I imagine crying like a little bitch. The problem wasn't with me lol. I was ringing him up and shut went down in a classic manager vs. tax exempt situation. It was pretty epic... Missed bowling tonight because we got out so late, and left my phone at home so I was incommunicado most of the day. Apart from reaching for shazam, no phone wasn't at all bad [note to self: wear a watch]. Missed a friend's drunk texts! Lol that could have been fun. This song popped into my head a few times today, and since it's on my playlist right now it's going on here. Granted, I was significantly less SSS than Andrew Bird today, but it's a great song, no matter how non-depressed you are. Just, idk, think of being alone in the wild and you'll achieve the same tone. It isn't as sad as it is contemplative. Enjoy.

Listened to this song countless times, no idea why.. It was that kind of day. I sent in my résumé and attachments, which was liberating. Later we went to Itita's for Baby's anniversary. Left to pick up Anaís and hurried to see a sneak preview of How Do You Know, courtesy of gofobo. :D Walked around Lincoln Road in the cool, listened to some jazz, taught her about Harold and the purple crayon, and opened a Christmas present. Came home to an empty house, which i soon filled with Rooney on repeat. Lol this song is so great. Parents came home from Merrick Park, and ate some good chícharo. Watched Salt, became convinced that Hollywood is trying to start the second Cold War, and later got existential with mom. Talked about regrets and living life, and about how things are going. This is the first time I've repeated a song from a previous post. I guess after two hundred originals my record isn't that bad. I chose it only because I saw a Hummingbird get knocked the fuck out and I thought of this song immediately. I'd never seen one so up close, or standing still. I saw its wings exteded without moving. It was incredible. And it lived! In other news, I think my dog is sick. How do you know if it's a cold or if he's choking?
Spent the day working on my film journals and then came home to watch Castle and knock out.

Modern Drift
by Efterklang

Spent the day listening to Tired by Adele, and as I was going to document it I realized I used it back in 66. In any case, the first time around I was thinking about Ana and picking my classes, and this time I'm far more chill, the semester's about to end, finals start tomorrow and I'm very close to making some progress with my life. This damn procrastination has me down! I need to get my ass in gear and send the MIFF people my paperwork. De madre. Today we came home from Orlando, during which I slept on the road, got home at about 4, then settled and went back out for Barbarita's first B-Day in the U.S. These people are always interesting. I felt a little jumpy, like I needed to get out of my own skin. The holidays are here.
The song choice is last minute: an eleven thirty Pandora rescue run. Jonsi radio: that's a yes. Despite all of us being on a post-marshmallow high from last night, as soon as we got home tonight, eyes closed. Came home to watch Adele perform on Ellen.. Made plans with Mayte for tomorrow. Hopefully we'll get to O cinemas alive, and leave the same way. Oh, damn. I just realized how much stuff I have to do. Still have to study for Tuesday's final, read the gamebook for France, and make the Film Journals also for Tuesday. Revisions are due Wednesday, and I should probably sleep in between. That's it. Nitey nites. Reminder: Return Winter's Bone to the Redbox.

I didn't even mention that this is the two hundredth day of the Sound... To think, this all started as an attempt to get organized in the summer, and it turned into something I do religiously. Thanks, The Sound, for steering me away from social networking sites and making me focus on what's really important: the music. I never would've really heard it without this. Here's to 200 days. *salt* *tequila* *lime*
